Domestic violence

Domestic violence includes any form of physical, sexual and/or psychological violence between people who live or have lived in the same household. It does not matter whether the persons are in a marriage, a registered partnership or simply living together.

Domestic violence can manifest itself in the following ways:

  • threat
  • humiliation and degradation
  • insult
  • intimidation
  • threat, to harm the children
  • Psychological, physical and sexual abuse
  • Rape
  • deprivation of liberty
  • Attempted or completed homicide

Domestic violence often takes place behind closed doors. However, it can also take place outside the home, e.g. on the street, at work or in other places.

The situation is particularly stressful for those affected because domestic violence often begins insidiously and is carried out by a supposed and often beloved confidant in an actual place of protection or retreat.

Victims of domestic violence often suffer for years without confiding in anyone because the fear and shame are too great. The state government has taken a variety of initiatives to raise awareness of the issue and increase protection for women and girls affected.
