County police authorities
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the police perform their duties in 47 district police authorities and three higher state authorities. The Ministry of the Interior is the supreme supervisory authority.
The organization of the police is a matter for the federal states. In North Rhine-Westphalia, 47 district police authorities (KPB) form the basis on the ground. Of these, 29 district authorities are responsible for 29 districts and 18 police headquarters (PP) in the independent cities, some of which are responsible for several independent cities The jurisdictional boundaries of the 47 authorities do not always coincide with those of the districts and independent cities.
For example, Cologne Police Headquarters is also responsible for the city of Leverkusen, while Essen Police Headquarters is also responsible for the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr.
In addition to the administrative tasks to be performed, the enforcement tasks of the district police authorities are divided into the core areas of emergency response/deployment, crime prevention and traffic accident preventionFor certain serious criminal offenses or special operational reasons, there is a graduated system according to which larger and more powerful district police authorities also perform tasks beyond their own area of responsibility.
